Survey highlights gambling concerns across Ukraine

Gambling

Highlights

  • Nationwide research underlines that most Ukrainians view gambling as a serious problem.

  • The findings point to young people and military personnel as key at-risk groups.

A landmark nationwide survey on the social impact of gambling was published on Thursday by Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation, revealing its initial findings.

The research, led by the Centre for Responsible Gaming, was supported by the Association of Ukrainian Gambling Operators. The survey included 3,164 adult participants, among them 415 young people, 409 internally displaced persons (IDPs), and 404 military personnel.

While many respondents viewed gambling as a major social issue, the survey found relatively low personal engagement, with around 84% saying they did not consider themselves gamblers.

One in three participants said that they don’t know anyone who gambles. Though only 5% have agreed to have gambled in the previous 12 months, out of which 2% have participated last month.

Even as facts suggest a lower rate of participation, 75% still allege that Ukraine is facing serious gambling problems.

The survey indicated that knowledge of responsible gambling measures was substantially greater among recent gambling participants.

About 71% of respondents knew they had access to their personal gaming statistics, while 67% reported being familiar with responsible gambling principles.

The findings disprove the perception that displaced persons are engaging more in gambling activity.  Rather, identified young people and military personnel as higher-risk groups that need targeted prevention and awareness efforts.
