NEW ZEALAND SETS JULY DATE FOR iGAMING LICENSING ROLLOUT

iGaming

Highlights

  • New Zealand to introduce a new licensing framework for iGaming in July 2026.

  • The staged approval process limits licenses to only 15 operators, ensuring transparency, competitive fairness, and compliance.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has set July as the new timeline for issuing iGaming licensing.

The Online Casino Gambling bill passed its first reading in parliament in July 2025 and is progressing toward final passage this May. The new licensing regime intends to bring the online casino sector under direct domestic control.

Officials report that nearly NZ$750 million is wagered by New Zealanders at offshore online casinos. Under a new regulatory framework, the online casino industry will undergo a three-stage approval process. Additionally, only up to 15 operators will be permitted to obtain a license.

With this new licensing regime in place, only a handful of operators will be entitled to enter the regulated market. These measures promote sector consolidation by ensuring transparency, competitive fairness, and rigorous compliance.

The first stage will commence as soon as the online gambling bill becomes law.  The preliminary stage invites operators to express their interest in entering the online casino market.

After completing all three stages, eligible operators will be granted licenses valid for up to 3 years, with the possibility of renewal provided they adhere to regulatory standards.
