New banking data from Nationwide Building Society suggests a 9% rise in the overall expenditure by customers on gambling in January. This is also reflected in the transaction volumes, which increased by 7% during the same timeframe.
A survey of 2,000 people who gamble, commissioned by Nationwide, indicated that the top 10% of UK gamblers spend approximately £745 a month. Furthermore, it suggests that up to 68% expect to bet more in 2026, with a busy sporting calendar.
The Nationwide study also highlighted the need for greater awareness, as 19% of respondents were unaware that banks and building societies offer gambling blocks.
“With a year of major sporting events ahead, we’re concerned that more people could find themselves gambling more than they can afford,” said Kathryn Townsend, Head of Customer Vulnerability for Nationwide.
Charity Game Care has also highlighted that gaming-related problems could give rise to financial difficulties, mental health challenges, and relationship breakdowns.
Rising spending levels and increased engagement have emerged as deep-rooted issues calling for immediate action in Great Britain.
