Mississippi University Opens Centre for Student Gambling Study

Gambling

Highlights

  • Ole Miss launches the first academic centre on student gambling.

  • The new program is formed to address the problem of gambling among students.

The University of Mississippi has launched the Center on Collegiate Gambling. Officials claim it to be the nation’s first academic centre dedicated exclusively to students’ gambling.

This academic center, approved by the university’s board of trustees, will analyze students’ gambling trends, including card games, sports betting, and prediction markets. The mission is to build successful and effective prevention and treatment strategies. It will also assess how betting activity influences integrity in collegiate sports.

Ole Miss researchers held a multi-campus study involving students from seven state universities. The report highlighted that 39% of the college students have engaged in gambling within a year. And for most of them, sports betting has been their preferred form of gambling.

Out of those who engaged with sports betting,  6% met the American Psychiatric Association’s criteria for problem gambling. The data also show the relationship between demographics and gambling tendencies.

Male students and students living off campus(Members of Greek Organizations) were also part of this research. It is found that approximately 58% use an online sportsbook

Daniel Durkin, associate professor of social work at Ole Miss, has said that “We were seeing a developing gambling problem, and not a whole lot of people were actually doing anything about it”.

Officials say the long-term aim of the research centre is to address the rising problem of gambling among college students.
