Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced at the National Press Club on Thursday that the government will limit gambling advertising. It could significantly impact gambling ads that run across TV, radio, digital platforms, and sports venues.
He further stated that the government is extending efforts to restrict illegal offshore gambling sites and prohibit additional forms of online betting. The reforms were on expected lines, as Albanese has been under pressure to address the landmark report led by the late Labour MP Peta Murphy.
The report, which contained 31 recommendations, including a phased ban on all forms of gambling advertising, was submitted to the government in June 2023.

- Limit gambling ads on broadcast TV to a maximum of three per hour between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm.
- Ban gambling ads on the radio during children’s arrival and departure times from school.Â
- Online ads shown only to logged-in adults, with an opt-out option available.
- Prevent celebrities and professional athletes from promoting gambling products or odds-based ads.
- No gambling ads in stadiums or on sports uniforms.
