Mexico’s news publication Reforma is under scrutiny over reports alleging irregularities in casino licensing.
-
The Gambling Trade Body (AIEJA) also accused Reforma of misleading information about casino licenses.
According to the latest report from Mexican newspaper Reforma, citing that 20 casino licences were granted to the company tied to politician Hernán Bermúdez Requena’s family.
Bermúdez Requena, a former security official, is detained in Mexico and is accused of being the head of the criminal group La Barredora.
However, Mexico’s gambling regulator and trade body AIEJA have refuted such claims and blamed the news agency for spreading false information.
Furthermore, the reports stated that these licences were approved in the final year of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tenure.
In response, Mexico’s Interior Ministry gambling regulator, SEGOB, has released a statement clarifying that Metropolitan Regional Chamber of Administrative Justice offered the licenses to Compañía Operadora Clíe.
