Bulgarian Football Union to vote on complete betting ban for staff

The BFU wants to expand its operational rights over football by centralising Commercial Betting Rights.
The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) aims to uphold a comprehensive ban that explicitly forbids all football staff from betting.
However, the discussions on the bill amendment will take place during the plenary meeting in Sofia on 20 March. If voters approve it, the ban on sports betting participation by football personnel will now become part of the Statutes of the Bulgarian Football Union.
The ban had previously existed under the standard BFU Disciplinary Regulations. But BFU general director Andrey Petrov and president Georgi Ivanov are pushing to convert it into permanent federation law.
This mandate not only reflects the massive regulatory shift but also calls on clubs to adopt structural changes to educate and monitor personnel to ensure they abstain from football-related wagering. This move demonstrates Bulgaria’s efforts to protect the integrity of sports betting.
The regulatory developments suggest that exclusive commercial, media, and digital rights are held centrally by the BFU for competitions it organises. With these guidelines, the BFU aims to eliminate potential conflicts of interest and reduce the risk of match-fixing.
