Australia Expands Gambling Harm Funding Through Levy Rise

Gambling Harm

Highlights

  • The Australian government has announced a new plan to allocate AU$112.7 million (US$73.3 million) to treat gambling harm.

  • Gambling ads are banned on digital platforms, except those that target users aged 18 or older and include an option to dismiss them.

The Federal Government has allocated AU$112.7m (US$73.3m) over the next 5 years to minimize gambling harm. Beyond the initial term, recurring funding is estimated at around AU$18.1 million each year.

This initiative is being labelled as “Addressing Online Gambling Harms”. It involves collective efforts of multiple agencies such as the Department of Social Services, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Starting with the Department of Social Services, its contributions will rise from AU$13.5 million in 2026-27 to AU$21.2 million in 2027-28.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport, and the Arts has agreed to offer an increase to AU$12.5 million in 2026–27.

Moreover, the national gambling regulator, ACMA, will send a financial package of AU$3.2 million and add  AU$5.2 million annually from 2026-27 to 2029-30. A portion of this funding can be attributed to an increase in the levy paid by licensed operators.

These funds are utilized to make significant arrangements in dealing with online gambling harm.

  1. Financial counselling expansion
  2. BetStop enhancements
  3. Wagering advertising, enforcement, and consumer protection
  4. National public awareness and education campaign
The new set of gambling reforms is expected to come into effect in January 2027. Under this new scheme, gambling ads can only be viewed by users aged 18 or over, with a compulsory opt-out option.
