Prediction Markets in Focus as Denmark Tightens Rules
HighlightsÂ
-
Danish authorities are to reinforce the prohibition on gambling ads during sporting events.
-
The government is working toward introducing a second set of regulations as part of the Gambling Package 2.
The key aspects of gambling reform in the gambling package 1 that were introduced gained momentum with government and the majority of the Danish parliament’s support. It aims to minimise gambling addiction and enforce a stricter framework for the promotion of betting services.
This proposal advocates for a whistle-to-whistle prohibition on gambling ads during sporting events. This marks a significant shift in the gambling advertising landscape. The new rule states that gambling adverts will be banned from 10 minutes before the sporting event begins to 10 minutes after the event ends.Â
The restriction would apply to all advertisements linked to the event. Also, it calls for prohibiting live odds banners in stadiums during matches. Further stricter enforcement to not permit ads linked to young people and refrain from using public figures in such adverts.Â
Efforts have been made to raise funds for the treatment of gambling addiction and also to solidify the self-exclusion option under ROFUS systems.
The Danish Gambling Authority is allowed to take action against non-compliant license holders and curb the activities of illegal gambling websites. As the gambling industry is changing fast with the possible expansion of prediction markets, officials feel that further restrictions might be necessary.Â
Gambling Package 2, which is composed of the second part of the new set of regulations.Â
If the bill is passed, the new reforms in the Gambling Package 1 will come into effect from 1st July. The set of regulations under the Gambling Package 2, if passed, is supposed to be amended from 1st January 2027.
