NSW Increases GambleAware Support by $1.3 Million

GambleAware

Highlights

  • The New South Wales Government plans to raise annual funding for GambleAware by AU$1.3 million.

  • The UK branch of GambleAware has proposed that the government introduce similar reforms.

A new funding boost for GambleAware was announced in New South Wales to improve gambling support services in the state.

This additional AU$1.3 million annually is allocated to enhance peer support and increase the tally of service locations from 34 to 49. Moreover, it enables them to hire 5 more peer support workers, bringing the total to 16.

GambleAware helpline operates 24/7 and has handled 9,500 calls so far. They provide services that include free counselling, financial advice, and peer support.

In 2024-25, GambleAware supported approximately 4,170 clients and conducted more than 19,000 counselling sessions. Six service providers have signed a three-year contract acknowledging that they will deliver quality support services across 10 regions in New South Wales.

NSW Minister for Gaming and Racing, David Harris, backed Gamble Aware through his independent analysis. The analysis has shown that the scheme is performing well, but funding is needed for community engagement, peer support, and operations.

This funding initiative is part of the broader reform to regulating gambling and reducing its harm within the state.

Following this, the Gable Aware of the UK has requested the government to implement similar laws.
