KSA Flags Youth Betting Risks Before World Cup Begins

Betting Risks

Highlights

  • The KSA has organised a public awareness campaign focused on young adults ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

  • Jumio’s Research Centre analysis shows that 63% of consumers globally expressed concerns about minors’ access to sports betting apps.

The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has kicked off a campaign called “Laat je niet zoek spelen in the local dialect, meaning “Don’t lose yourself in the game.” The motive of the public awareness campaign is to address the risks of sports betting among young adults.

As part of the campaign launch, the Kamp Seedorf street art collective created a mural in tribute to Glenn Helder. He was a former football player representing the national side and was seen openly discussing his own gambling problem. So, Helder has been chosen as the spokesperson for this campaign.

The former footballer quoted that “Football should be something you enjoy. With betting, you can lose much more than money. I know what it is like to lose yourself and also how important it is to find yourself again. That’s why I say to young people: don’t let yourself be lost”.

Influencer and footballer Noah Zeeuw interviewed Glenn Helder at the mural, who oversees content for the entire tournament. The content will soon be shared via social media channels such as Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube.

Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) chairman Michel Groothuizen sends a direct message to the target audience. In his message, he stated that the younger generation perceives sports betting differently from gambling. However, distinction regulators consider it to be both common and dangerous.

The campaign does not lecture; rather, it enlightens them about the betting risks through relatable stories.

Research firm Jumio has released a report suggesting that 63% of consumers worldwide are concerned about minors accessing sports betting apps during the FIFA World Cup.
