The report further unveils that unregulated providers are targeting younger demographics.
In a recent research analysis, it was found that Meta would have earned millions of euros from illegal ads if the same activity had continued throughout the year.Â
This study was carried out by XY Legal Solutions B.V.in partnership with VNLOK, analyzing publicly accessible information from Meta’s Ad Library across Facebook and Instagram. It was done using adverts displayed to users between the 1st and the 31st of March.Â
They have reported that close to 15,114 adverts promote illegal gambling linked to unregulated operators, not licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA).Of these, 64.5% targeted users under 24.Â
The study claimed that these ads reached approximately 38 million users in the Netherlands. These ads have collectively received estimates of 75.8 million impressions over the month.
The KSA regulator has quickly jumped into action, filing 4,600 reports with Meta regarding gambling advertisements on unauthorised platforms across Facebook and Instagram.Â
Imposing restrictions on gambling advertisements has always been a topic of discussion in the Netherlands. The nation has banned advertising without age restrictions to protect young people.
Though licensed operators follow this rule, the report clearly states that unregulated platform ads still target young adults via social media.
