  • The CDA councillor in the Netherlands proposes to raise the legal age for online slots from 18 to 24.

  • Politician Sümer is encouraging other municipal representatives and political parties to pressure lawmakers for reform.

Netherlands local politician Meryam Sümer, representing  Enschede, proposes that the legal age be raised to 24 for all gambling products due to rising debt among young people.

She also advocated for tougher restrictions on buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) schemes and gambling advertising. Municipal data reveal that at present, one in five young men in Enschede is in debt.

It is said that in 2025 alone, there were 12,145 filed cases of people experiencing problematic debt—960 individuals, who are closer to the risk of eviction or losing access to essential utilities.

The municipality has reached out to 4,000 locals facing financial difficulties, with close to ⅓ of cases reporting engagement rates above the national average of around 20%.

Sümer, a councillor and welfare worker, has emphasised that easy access to credit and gambling website software has been the root cause of financial challenges faced by Dutch youth.

Furthermore, irregularities with gambling advertisements have prompted Sümer to increase the minimum age for online gambling from 18 to 24.

The chairman of the Dutch Gambling Regulator (KSA) has condemned this plan, saying it drives youngsters into the black market.

Sümer also wishes other councillors and other political parties to show their active support for this plan.
