The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has introduced tighter limits on the types of event-based contracts that prediction market software solutions can offer. Even though prediction markets are justified in being useful for assessing public opinion. But lately, event contracts related to military actions were deemed inappropriate by regulators.
The scheme devised for contracts that especially deal with activities outlawed by federal law. It covers war, terrorism, assassination, and other activities that pose serious ethical questions.
The move is to establish a robust framework for a clear review process before it is launched into the market. It helps in deciding whether the contract promotes unethical activities and seems not in favour of the public interest.
These proposals have come at the right time. As a prediction market, it is experiencing rapid growth in recent times, offering contracts beyond conventional topics, such as elections and economic indicators.
Earlier this year, the Congress section of lawmakers has been very critical of the markets that allowed users to speculate on ongoing military operations and the safety of specific individuals. They alleged such cases blur the line between financial instruments and something more dangerous, where profits could encourage real-world harm.
CFTC has organized a 45-day public comment period, giving industry players, academics, and the public a chance to offer suggestions.
