Putin Asked To Legalise Online Casinos By Finance Ministry

Online Casino

Highlights

  • Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov proposes the legalization of online casinos to offset losses from the war with Ukraine.

  • Plans to bring online casinos to temporarily occupied territories in Ukraine are underway.

Finance Minister Anton Siluanov reportedly urges  President Vladimir Putin to lift Russia’s ban on online casinos. As the war with Ukraine is entering its fourth year in February, the government looks for new sources of income to manage the rising cost of the war against Ukraine.

The reports from RBC Ukraine claim that the Russian government has spent more than 42 trillion roubles on the war.

Siluanov devises a plan that suggests that at atleast 30% of the winning payouts from single operators each month be returned to the government. This proposal is estimated to add approximately 100 billion rubles (US$1.3 billion) to the budget annually.

The online casino industry has been labelled illegal in Russia since 2009; however, the unregulated sector still manages to generate over 3 trillion roubles in annual turnover, with roughly 100 illicit platforms in operation.

The Finance Minister also pointed out that the land-based casino sector, accessible only through special economic zones, accounts for 1.7 trillion roubles per year.

It seems that the authorities are interested in expanding online gambling services to the occupied territories of Ukraine as well.
