Indiana Hearing Fuels Talk of Online Casino Legalisation

Online Casinos

Highlights

  • Indiana introduced a sweepstakes casino ban last month.

  • The possibility of online casino legalisation.

New Indiana online casino sweepstakes ban sparks debate on online casino legalisation—House Public Policy Commission hearing on that bill  HB 1052.

During the committee hearing, sponsor Rep. Ethan Manning indicated the prohibition of picking winners and losers without the legalisation of online casinos. Natalie Huffman, General Counsel of the Indiana Gaming Commission, has stated that IGC can’t act on unlicensed operators under the state’s law.

The lawmakers have requested multiple amendments that include online casino legislation. However, the committee did not vote on the bill or amendments during the hearing. But the separate bill was advocated to legalise iLottery 9-3.

Besides the sweepstakes bill amendment, those voting against the iLottery bill also wanted to include iGaming. Manning authored the iLottery bill, too.

The casino bill has cleared the Public Policy Committee, but did not receive a floor vote last year in the Ways and Means Committee.

In spite of this, Houston and Senate President Tempore Rodric Bray are both willing to discuss online casino legalisation.
