UK Regulator Costs Rise 49% Amid Lottery Legal Fight

  • Gambling Commission’s operating costs surged 49% during the period of 2024-25.

  • The UKGC took enforcement action in 24 cases, resulting in GBP 4.2 million ($5.64 million) in penalties.

The UK Gambling Commission annual report for 204/25 indicates that the yearly expenditure was up by 49% from£40.4m from last year to touch  £60.3m. The fourth National Lottery license competition consumed around £14.2m compared to just £353,000 in 2023-24.

Despite the increasing spend, the commission still managed to end the year with £10.9m in reserves. However, it is less than the previous year of £13.6m. The income from gambling regulation fees was marginally increased to £27.9m from £26.2m. But giant-in aid funding concerning National Lottery Operations stood at £29.1m, double that of £14.4m in 2023-24

CEO Andrew Rhodes said, “The substantial work done in 2024-25 gives the Commission a great opportunity to make further steps forward in our work to make gambling safer, fairer and crime-free.

“This is an opportunity everyone at the Commission is fully dedicated to making the most of in the year ahead.”

The enforcement action in 24 cases undertaken by UKGC accounted for £4.2m in fines and regulatory settlements.
