New York Moves to Outlaw In-Play Sports Betting

Sports Betting

Highlights

  • New York’s legislative proposal aims to ban in-play sports betting.

  • If passed, this bill could mark a significant deviation from the current practices in New York.

Assembly member Linda Rosenthal introduced a bill that was submitted to the committee on Racing and Wagering. This bill intends to prohibit betting operators from accepting in-play sports wagers. If it has been approved, it applies to state racing, pari-mutuel wagering, and breeding law to ban all live betting or sporting events.

As per the proposed legislation, it is mandated for the gaming commission to eliminate any casino, mobile sports wagering license, or mobile sports wagering operator from accepting in-play sports bets from players of New York.

If the bill is passed, it indicates a dramatic change from the exciting sports betting system in New York, where in-play betting becomes a crucial component of the legal sports wagering market. Meanwhile, operators looking to increase their market share have been obliged with an insurmountable 51% GGR Tax.

Upon passing, the bill is expected to be quickly amended, following recent incidents in professional baseball and basketball.
