A group of five accused criminals was arrested as a result of raids that took place across Sweden and Spain. The law enforcement agency of the European Union, Europol, has coordinated with the authorities of two countries to deploy 150 police officers to crack down on the €20 million illegal betting ring.
The joint mission included places in both Sweden and Spain and took place on 28-29 November. The agency has found out that the Stockholm area of Sweden has been the base for the criminal network. The investigation has uncovered that an illegal gambling operation generated around €20 million every year.
This raid also exposed the illegal betting ring’s active role in laundering money for other criminal groups, and they are also connected to drug trafficking across the Nordic region, situated in Sweden.
The Europol officials are committed to eradicating illicit groups with international ties that pose threats to the livelihood of common people.
