FRANCE: TRADE BODY OPPOSES iGAMING LEGALISATION
Highlights
-
Casinos de France has compelled the French government to push aside proposals looking to legalise online gambling.
-
Legalising online casinos is estimated to result in an annual loss of €546 million for public finances.
The trade association Casinos de France, representing land-based casinos in the country, has voiced strong opposition to the legalization of iGaming, claiming it could result in an annual loss of over €500 million in public spending.
It firmly rejected AFJEL’s (online gambling association) argument that the country is losing €1.2 billion, approximately, to unregulated casino operators. There have been many attempts recently to legislate the iGaming market. So far, only online sports betting, horse race betting and poker are allowed.
The trade body backed its claim, stating that this regulatory change can negatively impact public finances, potentially resulting in a revenue loss of €546 million. Casinos de France also indicated that this law would lower social and economic ties.
They also said that land-based casino models are “social, humane and profoundly responsible”, in contrast to the online sector, which does not guarantee the same level of security for players.”
