Northern Ireland Lawmakers Seek Higher Online Gambling Taxes

Gambling Taxes

Highlights

  • Northern Ireland inter-party group calls for higher taxes on online betting.

  • The group’s chairperson, Philip McGuigan MLA, stated that gambling-related harm costs over £1bn annually.

The Northern Ireland Assembly’s All-Party Group on limiting gambling-related harm in the country has sent a letter to the UK chancellor in response to the Treasury proposals to harmonise tax rates for different forms of online gambling.

The APG members have raised concerns that aligning tax rates motivates gambling companies to drive customers toward more addictive products, potentially undermining efforts to curb gambling harm across the UK.

Instead, the party seems to strongly favour the recommendation of the Social Market Foundation and Institute for Public Policy Research to raise the Remote Gaming Duty to 50% and the General Betting Duty to 25%  They also propose that this move is estimated to generate extra revenue of £2bn ($2.6bn) annually.

This could also mean scrutinising the most addictive forms of online gambling. APG Chairperson Philip McGuigan stated that gambling-related harm costs an excess of £1 billion annually, and online gambling software products present a higher risk compared to traditional betting.
