AI Assistants Wrongly Label Unlicensed Casinos as KSA-Approved, Study Finds
Highlights
- A Dutch study found that all ten AI assistants tested recommended at least one online gambling operator without a Dutch licence.
- Researchers identified misleading licensing claims, raising concerns about consumer protection and the reliability of AI-generated gambling recommendations.
A study by XY Legal Solutions has found that popular artificial intelligence assistants can direct users towards unlicensed online casinos and, in some cases, incorrectly present them as legally authorised in the Netherlands.
Conducted between August and September 2026, the research evaluated ten AI chat and search assistants using Dutch-language consumer queries.
The assessment included questions about popular online casinos, requests for casinos operating without the country’s CRUKS self-exclusion system, and queries framed as academic research.
All ten AI tools named at least one operator without a Dutch online gambling licence in at least one conversation. Researchers recorded 79 test interactions, of which 33 included recommendations naming at least one unlicensed operator.
The study also found that some systems presented these operators as legal or licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling regulator.
Microsoft Copilot, for example, generated a list titled “Top 50 legal casinos” that included unlicensed brands and incorrectly implied that they were authorised and connected to CRUKS.
Other assistants highlighted benefits associated with unlicensed websites, including higher bonuses, faster payouts and fewer identity checks. Some tools initially refused to provide recommendations but later supplied them when users rephrased their questions or continued prompting.
These findings raise concerns about the role of AI-generated recommendations in influencing consumer decisions, particularly when users rely on conversational search tools to identify trustworthy gambling platforms.
For iGaming operators and technology providers, the results highlight the importance of accurate licensing information, responsible AI integration and clear distinctions between regulated and unregulated services.
