NGB Cautions Fans Over Illegal Betting Before World Cup

Illegal betting

Highlights

  • The NGB regulator has warned South Africans about illegal betting ahead of the World Cup.

  • NGB has been added to the list of other regulatory boards issuing warnings ahead of the World Cup.

South Africa’s National Gambling Board (NGB) has urged the public to be wary of illegal online gambling software and fake betting apps before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The regulator believes that criminals will look to exploit the heightened betting activity surrounding the major sporting tournament by targeting users with fraudulent online betting schemes.

These criminals’ eyes are on the mega event, which they will use to distribute fake betting apps to the audience. NGB officials state that these platforms are advertised on various social media channels and can easily deceive consumers.

NGB also warned about these fraudulent schemes that appear identical to legitimate or licensed bookmakers operating in South Africa.

The regulators have mandated caution for players with their betting approach during the World Cup. The guidelines for fair and safe play were to verify legitimacy, avoid clicking suspicious links, and not share sensitive personal information.

Beyond just spreading awareness about fraudulent gambling platforms, the regulatory boards were also circulating responsible gambling messages among the public that included setting budget limits, avoiding gambling under the influence of substances, and perceiving betting as entertainment and not as income.

The NGB has become the latest regulatory body to alert gamblers ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
