The online video streaming platform YouTube has proposed rigid rules for gambling and violent, graphic video games to ensure the safety of vulnerable audiences.
Game Aware released a study in September, which showed that around 87% of younger people have come across gambling content on the internet via platforms such as YouTube. YouTube has announced that, starting November 17, it will enforce its community guidelines, aligning with digital trends and industry standards.
The new framework will prohibit creators from directing users to gambling websites or apps that lack verification from Google. This also applies to gambling that involves digital goods having a monetary value. It includes video game skins, cosmetics and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
YouTube is looking to incorporate extra measures to safeguard younger adults from viewing graphic violence in gaming and other gambling harms.
In a statement, YouTube wrote: “Our policies continue to evolve with the digital ecosystem. These updates ensure YouTube remains a safe environment for users while allowing creative freedom for our creator community.”
