Takaichi's win may boost Japan's Casino Plans
Highlights
-
Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, is expected to encourage the country’s growth of integrated casino resorts.
-
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe introduced the Integrated Resort Promotion Law to remote resorts with leisure and recreation services.
Recently elected Sanae Takaichi became the first woman prime minister of Japan. She has been viewed as an advocate, with her actions likely to propel the growth of integrated resorts in the region.
On Tuesday, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) became the 104th Japanese prime minister. A late coalition between the LDP and the pro-IR Japan Innovation Party ensured her victory. She has yet to announce her stance on integrated casino resort development publicly.
However, a new political coalition between the LDP and Ishin party and her long association with former prime minister Shinzo Abe suggest that she strongly favours the growth of IRs. The Integrated Resort Promotion Law was introduced in 2016 by the former prime minister, who promised to “promote resorts offering leisure and recreation services all in one place, which will attract visitors from all over the world”.Â
In 2018, the development of three IRs was approved across the country. It seemed very promising, but the outbreak of COVID-19 led to its downfall.
In December 2024, the Japanese lawmakers approved the appointment of new gaming commissioners to revive the bidding process.Â
