Canadian Lawmakers legalised single-event sport wagering, leading to the rise of Ontario becoming the only open commercial market in the country.
Senator Marty Deacon has led the sports betting advertising proposal by introducing Bill-211 as a part of renewed efforts to create a national framework for sports betting advertising after the fall of S-269 due to the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in January.
Last week, the Senate had brief discussions for about 10 minutes on Decon’s legislation in the Senate Standing Committee on Transport and Communications. “We need a common approach, a national standard similar to alcohol, similar to tobacco ads, that is not patchwork,” Deacon told CBC last month. “
According to a Maru Public Opinion poll from last year, about 59% of Canadians favour a ban on gambling advertising.
Since legalising single-event sports wagering in 2021, Ontario has emerged as the only open commercial market in the industry. Ontario regulators have incorporated firm advertising guidelines in North America, which means a ban of using celebrities and athletes to promote gambling.
