Online Casinos

Highlights

  • Treasurer Deborah Goldberg and Governor Maura Healey’s opposition sparks new concerns over iCasino legislation in 2026.

  • According to the Muradian bill, the online casino industry’s revenue will be taxed at 15%.

The lawmakers in Massachusetts are looking to address the massive budget gap by legalising online casinos in the upcoming year. But Treasurer Deborah Goldberg and Governor Maura Healey have advocated against it, voicing their own concerns.

The legislators, however, have extended the timeline for the bill till 16th March 2026. This gives lawmakers time to reflect on the potential consequences in the future. Deborah Goldberg condemned the expansion of online gambling in 2026.

Goldberg oversees the Massachusetts Lottery, which is launching online lottery offerings in 2026. Meanwhile, Governor Maura Healey revealed recently that she has long feared the gambling market and its effects on problem gambling.

She stated that the news and information that she received about gambling worldwide is quite disturbing. She further added, saying that while there might be solutions to these problems, she expects policymakers across the country to consider data and facts about the gaming industry.

The proposed Muradian’s bill enables the state to collect a 15% tax on the total revenue generated from iGaming software products. Gambling industry stakeholders predict it can generate up to $200 million in annual revenue for the state.
