Spain’s leading addiction treatment network (UNAD) has renewed calls for a complete ban on all gambling and betting advertising, advocating that such promotions are incompatible with public health and the country’s addiction prevention policy.
The organizations stated that these gambling advertisements and promotions can sow the seed for addictive behaviors, especially with younger adults, leading to social health and economic consequences.
UNAD also pointed out that non-substance addiction, such as gambling, betting, and video gaming, might not exhibit any physical traces, making it harder to detect in early stages. Spain’s Network for Addiction Care (UNAD )’s recent study shows that a total of 1,304 individuals have sought treatment for non-substance addictions across 24 network entities, with 24% accounting for women.
While female patients’ in-person addiction was to slot machines and then bingo, their primary online addiction was related to video gaming. Male patients are typically aged between 34 and 41, employed, and childless. The main additions for them were slot machines and sports betting platform.
This is the reason the organizations want more action taken to prevent commercial messaging from reinforcing addictive behavior.
